African-American Spirituals
During this season of Lent, you will notice the use of spirituals in our worship each week. As we modern-day Christians observe Lenten practices, spirituals can serve as expressions of lament for the suffering, sorrows, and oppression we see in our world; as expressions of longing to follow our faith where it leads us; and expressions of hope for freedom from that which keeps us bound. The spirituals used in our services are taken from The Hymnal 1982 and from Lift Every Voice and Sing II, the African American Hymnal of the Episcopal Church.

Christopher Houlihan, Organist
Join us for an exciting program performed on the renowned Baroque-style Beckerath tracker organ at historic St. Stephen’s Church in Millburn.  Hailed as “dazzling” by the Wall Street Journal, Christopher Houlihan was named by Diapason magazine as one of the top 20 organists under the age of 30 in 2015.  He has performed in major venues across the nation, from the Kennedy Center to Disney Hall, as well as in Europe and at the national conventions of the American Guild of Organists and the Organ Historical Society.  He holds a Master’s degree from The Juilliard School where he studied with Paul Jacobs. Previous studies were with John Rose of Trinity College, Hartford.  Last spring, he was named the John Rose College Organist-and-Directorship Distinguished Chair of Chapel Music at Trinity College.  No tickets required.  A suggested donation of $10 can be made at the door.  Children accompanied by an adult are welcomed.  Meet the artist at a reception following the recital.  For directions to the church or more information visit www.ststephensmillburn.org or call 973-376-0688.

FOOD BARREL
We had a big success on S O U P E R  Sunday, with 83 cans of soup being donated to the barrel.  Analysis by the Barrel Statistician Julia Dorn revealed that 78 of the cans were split among Progresso (43), Campbell Chunky (24) and Campbell (11) soups.  We’ll have some other special days as the year goes along, but for now, please keep filling the barrel with nonperishable food.

This Sunday, 4 February,  is important for three reasons, to wit: (1) It is the date of the annual parish meeting (2) it is the date for the SUPER BOWL and (3) it is
SOUPER SUNDAY for our food barrel.  Please bring cans (of your choice) of soup for the food barrel.  Other nonperishable food items of course are welcome too, but it would be great if everyone could bring a can or cans of SOUP to put in the barrel this Sunday.
